braids by Sally

The braid book

Twelve styles Sally can braid for you, for the students at Het Kasteel. The numbers are only labels so you can point at one — there is no ranking in them. Where a style has four photos, it is the same braid from the side, from the back and from above.

Prices and how to book will be added here soon.

    Straight-back cornrows

8 braids · straight back · tight partings

The basic one, and the hardest to get genuinely clean. Eight braids of equal thickness in straight rows to the back. The straighter the partings, the better it sits.

    Curved rows with rings

Curved rows · side parting · rings in colour

The braids do not run straight back but curve around the head, starting from a parting at the side. The rings are a separate choice: gold, or in colour like these.

    Cornrows with a fade

5 thick braids · short sides

Only the top is braided; the sides stay short. The transition does the work, so this looks sharpest soon after a fresh fade.

    Leaf pattern

Centre panel · fine partings · many braids

A leaf sits in the middle of the head: braids fanning outward from a single spine. Around it the rows follow the shape of the skull. The most work of anything here.

    Sunburst

From one point on the crown · V-shaped partings

Every braid starts at a single point on the crown and runs outward like a ray. From above it is a star; from the side you would never know, which is the whole point of it.

    Wave pattern

Curved rows · feathered partings · braided long

Wide braids running in waves across the head, with fine feather patterns worked into the space between them. The braids carry on well past the neck.

    Fan

Fanning out from the side · short sides

From a low point at the side the braids open outward across the head, spreading wider as they go up. Best with a sharp fade underneath.

    Stitch braids

Wavy rows · visible stitch partings

The stitch: every parting is a ridge of small crosswise lines, set tight enough to count one by one. Laid in waves here rather than in straight rows.

    Triangles

    Geometric partings · thick braids

The pattern is not in the braids but in the partings: triangles and diamonds dividing the hair into panels. Quiet from across a room, precise up close.

    Spiral

    Circles around the crown

The braids turn in circles around the crown, working outward from the centre. From above it reads as one continuous spiral.

    Zigzag back

7 braids · zigzag partings · loose ends

Straight rows running back, but the partings zigzag — which breaks up the hard lines without making it busy. The ends are left loose and curl at the nape.

    Four thick cornrows

4 braids · centre parting · loose ends

Few braids, set thick: two on each side of a parting down the middle. The calmest of the twelve, and the easiest to keep looking good.

Four photos · side, side, back, above
